Kahilu Theatre presents musical Spring Awakening
Kahilu Theatre will present Spring Awakening at 7 p.m. June 23 and at 4 p.m. June 24. The eight-time Tony Award winning alternative-rock Broadway musical will be directed by Beth Dunnington and showcases artists of the Kahilu Theatre Youth Troupe. The production will also feature musical director Phil Kadet, choreographer Angel Prince and vocal coach Val Underwood.

Based on a play written by Frank Wedekind in 1891, Spring Awakening was adapted into a musical in 2006. With book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, this acclaimed broadway musical is a compelling story of the hardships young people face as they grow from childhood into early adulthood.

Two-step with Waimea Ballroom Dance Club
The Waimea Ballroom Dance Club is offering six weeks of two-step dance lessons on Mondays from June 4 through July 9 at the Kahilu Town Hall. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. for the first two weeks, dancing begins at 7:00 p.m.
The cost is $40, and a one-time drop in is $10.

Photography exhibit has opening reception
An opening reception for Outlook: Photography Exhibition will be from 6-9 p.m. June 1 at the East Hawaii Cultural Center.
The exhibit will run from June 1 through June 29. These responsive photographs are reminiscent of time and place, framing a perspective of people to the landscape they live within. This collection of work from individual artists impart insight of the social participation, conscious and unconscious, with place. Each image inquires how the human element develops or poses obstacles for the dissemination of culture and visceral knowledge of land, our collective home.

Learn monoprints with Carl F.K. Pao
Carl F.K. Pao, a native Hawaiian artist and educator, will be teaching a monoprint workshop at Piko Press from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 at the East Hawaii Cultural Center. The workshop is for anyone interested in a straight forward printing process that does not require a press. Beginners and seasoned artists are welcome.
The deadline to register is June 1, and the cost is $75 for EHCC members and $95 for nonmembers.
This workshop is in conjunction with the Annual Native Hawaiian Exhibit, and part of the Emerging Artist Sustainability Program (EASE) at the EHCC. The purpose of the program is to enhance the experience of culture through craft and support native Hawaiian artists on the Big Island.

See Bottle of Blue at Mahukona Beach Park
Mahukona Music Under the Stars presents the band Bottle of Blue from 6-9 p.m. June 2 at the Mahukona Beach Park pavilion on Kawaihae-Mahukona Rd. near Highway 270.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own food and drink, but there will be food available for purchase from Cool Runnings catering truck.
Camping permits are available through state parks.

An evening of sculpture at Volcano Art Center
Artist and sculptor Randall Shiroma will give a presentation on his recent outdoor public works within the state of Hawaii from 7-9 p.m. May 31 at Volcano Art Center Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village. This evening will provide an opportunity to meet the artist as he shares his inspiration and processes behind his dynamic sculptures.
Shiroma has been commissioned for various projects on the mainland and Hawaii, including two from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Hilton Towers in San Jose, Calif., the Four Seasons on Maui, and Santa Clara Library, to name a few. He has participated in numerous solo as well as group exhibitions, and has received awards and fellowships in California and Hawaii.
This event is free, although a $5 donation to Volcano Art Center is greatly appreciated.

Bill Jaeger named Kailua Village Artists featured artist of June
The Kailua Village Artists featured member artist for the month of June is stained glass artist Bill Jaeger.
Jaeger learned the art of stained glass many years ago, while also working full time and earning a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Wichita State University and a MBA from the University of Kansas. It was not until he and his wife Kathleen moved to the Big Island in 2004 that he had the luxury to completely immerse himself in the art and stretch his creative capabilities. Since then, he has developed a style and skill evident in every piece he makes; each being an original design created out of hand cut glass then soldered together using the copper foil method.
This month Jaeger will be showing a new piece, “Riding the Current”, a green sea honu, which incorporates bevels and textured glass. He will also be showing other creatures of the sea, such as a “Kona Blue Marlin,” “Kona Dolphin,” “Conch Shell” and other honus.
To meet the featured artist and see his latest work, come to the gallery on June 1. Jaeger will be demonstrating some stained-glass techniques used to create a panel, such as glass cutting and foiling. The Kailua Village Artists Gallery is located at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Suite C-110 in the Kona Marketplace in Kailua-Kona. The gallery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
